The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Den 24 januari skickade det europeiska civila samhället ett öppet brev till Europeiska kommissionens ordförande, Europaparlamentets talman och det belgiska ordförandeskapet för Europeiska unionens råd. Undertecknarna av brevet uppmanade de tre viktigaste EU-institutioner som deltar i EU:s beslutsfattande att vidta konkreta åtgärder för att inleda en öppen, tydlig och regelbunden dialog med det civila samhällets organisationer på alla politikområden, i enlighet med artikel 11 i fördraget om Europeiska unionen.
Initiativet till det öppna brevet togs av Gruppen för civilsamhällesorganisationer vid EESK och Civil Society Europe, och det innehåller konkreta förslag till genomförande. Brevet fick stöd av totalt 156 undertecknare från 26 medlemsstater. Bland undertecknarna finns 39 europeiska nätverk, 85 nationella organisationer och 60 medlemmar av Gruppen för civilsamhällesorganisationer vid EESK.
Den civila dialogen är fortfarande ojämn och ostrukturerad inom EU-institutionerna, trots de rättsliga bestämmelserna. Därför uppmanar undertecknarna av det öppna brevet #EUCivilDialogueNow EU-institutionerna att
Dessa insatser måste bygga på rekommendationerna från konferensen om Europas framtid. Som ett första steg föreslår undertecknarna att kommissionen utarbetar ett meddelande om att stärka den civila dialogen på EU-nivå.
