The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Den 24. januar sendte det europæiske civilsamfund et åbent brev til formændene for Kommissionen, Europa-Parlamentet og det belgiske formandskab for Rådet for den Europæiske Union. I brevet opfordrer underskriverne indtrængende de tre største institutioner i Den Europæiske Union (EU), der er involveret i EU's beslutningsproces, til at træffe konkrete foranstaltninger til at gennemføre en åben, gennemsigtig og regelmæssig dialog med civilsamfundsorganisationer inden for samtlige politikområder, jf. artikel 11 i traktaten om Den Europæiske Union.
Det er EØSU's Gruppe af civilsamfundsorganisationer og Civil Society Europe, der tog initiativ til det åbne brev, der indeholder specifikke forslag til gennemførelse. Brevet har fået støtte fra i alt 156 underskrivere fra 26 medlemsstater. Underskriverne omfatter 39 europæiske netværk, 85 nationale organisationer og 60 medlemmer af EØSU's Gruppe af civilsamfundsorganisationer.
Den civile dialog er på trods af de retlige bestemmelser fortsat mangelfuld og ustruktureret på tværs af EU's institutioner. Derfor opfordrer underskriverne af det åbne brev #EUCivilDialogueNow EU-institutionerne til at:
Denne indsats skal tage udgangspunkt i anbefalingerne fra konferencen om Europas fremtid. Som et første skridt foreslår underskriverne en meddelelse fra Kommissionen om styrkelse af den civile dialog på EU-plan.
