The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Sammanhållningspolitiken är avgörande för att hantera covid-19-krisen, uppnå klimatneutralitet senast 2050 och minska skillnaderna i Europa. I ett nyligen antaget yttrande varnar EESK för att kriget i Ukraina är sammanhållningspolitikens största utmaning under överskådlig framtid.
Snabba åtgärder krävs för att hjälpa flyktingar och säkerställa Ukrainas europeiska integration. I sitt yttrande understryker kommittén också att den i högsta grad ställer sig bakom en snabb EU-anslutning för Ukraina och den efterlyser att sammanhållningspolitiken och dess finansieringsinstrument anpassas i enlighet med detta.
EESK föreslår specifikt att det inrättas en separat EU-fond för att underlätta återuppbyggnad och utveckling efter kriget. I yttrandet, som antogs vid plenarsessionen i maj, analyseras kommissionens meddelande om sin rapport ”Sammanhållning i Europa på väg mot 2050”.
Rapporten offentliggjordes två veckor före Rysslands invasion av Ukraina och tar därför inte hänsyn till dess konsekvenser. Föredragande Krzysztof Balon framhöll: ”På kort och medellång sikt är den största utmaningen för sammanhållningspolitiken Rysslands angrepp, som i själva verket också är ett angrepp på Europeiska unionen.” Medföredragande Gonçalo Lobo Xavier tillade: ”Sammanhållningspolitiken är fortfarande ett grundläggande verktyg för den europeiska ekonomins återhämtning och motståndskraft och särskild uppmärksamhet bör ägnas åt små och medelstora företag.” (tk)
