Together for a democratic and prosperous future in Tunisia

Following the recent decision by Tunisian President Kais Saied to prolong the suspension of parliamentary activities until the next general elections in December 2022:

  • We strongly support the commitment of the people of Tunisia to democracy, to the constitution and to a well-functioning and legitimate parliament. The return to a normal functioning of state institutions and the restoration of institutional stability should take place as soon as possible, without any further suspension of parliamentary activities.
  • The EESC recognizes the key role played by the National Dialogue Quartet composed of the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (UTICA), the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), the Tunisian Human Rights League (LTDH) and the Tunisian Order of Lawyers as mediators to consolidate democratic gains and form a lasting constitutional settlement after the Jasmine revolution.

As representatives of organised civil society, we call for the active implication of the National Dialogue Quartet in the economic, electoral and constitutional reforms that are needed to overcome the current crisis. Inclusive and transparent engagement with all stakeholders is key to ensure the success of these reforms and to guarantee a democratic and prosperous future for Tunisia.
