Η ενίσχυση της διεθνούς συνεργασίας είναι καίριας σημασίας για να καταστούν οι ωκεανοί βιώσιμοι έως το 2030 και να διαφυλαχθεί η προστασία και η ασφάλεια στη θάλασσα, αναφέρει η ΕΟΚΕ σε νέα γνωμοδότησή της που εγκρίθηκε κατά τη σύνοδο ολομέλειας του Ιανουαρίου.
Λόγω της πολυπλοκότητάς της, η διακυβέρνηση των ωκεανών δεν μπορεί να θεωρείται απλώς «θαλάσσια υπόθεση», αλλά απαιτεί μια διεπιστημονική και ολοκληρωμένη προσέγγιση για την υποστήριξη των φορέων λήψης αποφάσεων σε όλα τα επίπεδα.
Η ανθρώπινη επίδραση στους ωκεανούς συχνά οφείλεται σε χερσαίες δραστηριότητες. Σημαντικό ποσοστό της θαλάσσιας ρύπανσης προέρχεται από την απόρριψη λυμάτων, φυτοφαρμάκων, αντιβιοτικών, φωσφορικών αλάτων και πλαστικών, καθώς και από μη εκραγέντες μηχανισμούς.
Σύμφωνα με την ΕΟΚΕ, η ΕΕ ―ως νομοθέτης και διεθνής παράγοντας― διαδραματίζει καίριο ρόλο στην ενίσχυση των δικτύων και των εταιρικών σχέσεων και οι διάφοροι ενδιαφερόμενοι φορείς θα πρέπει να συμμετέχουν αποτελεσματικά και με διαφάνεια σε όλα τα στάδια της διαδικασίας.
«Η ΕΕ διαδραματίζει ηγετικό ρόλο στις προσπάθειες που καταβάλλονται προς όφελος των ωκεανών, αλλά όλες οι χώρες οφείλουν να επωμιστούν τον δικό τους ρόλο. Μόνο με αυτόν τον τρόπο οι νέες γενιές θα μπορούν ακόμη να ονομάζουν τον πλανήτη μας ‘Μπλε πλανήτη’», δήλωσε ο εισηγητής της γνωμοδότησης Stefano Palmieri.
Για την επίτευξη ουδέτερου ισοζυγίου διοξειδίου του άνθρακα έως το 2050 και βιωσιμότητας έως το 2030, η ΕΕ θα πρέπει να εστιάσει στη λήψη μέτρων με στόχο τη διασφάλιση ευημερούντος θαλάσσιου περιβάλλοντος και την προστασία των αλιευτικών αποθεμάτων, πτυχές που είναι αμφότερες ζωτικής σημασίας για πολλές κοινότητες.
