The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Během lednového plenárního zasedání přijal EHSV stanovisko, v němž zdůraznil, že je naprosto nezbytné posílit mezinárodní spolupráci, neboť jedině tak bude možné dosáhnout do roku 2030 udržitelnosti oceánů a zajistit bezpečnost a ochranu na moři.
Správa oceánů má velmi komplexní charakter, a proto ji nelze redukovat pouze na námořní aspekty. Naopak je zapotřebí zaujmout k ní multidisciplinární a integrovaný přístup s cílem podpořit činitele s rozhodovací pravomocí na všech úrovních.
Za zhoršování stavu oceánů způsobené člověkem mohou z velké části aktivity probíhající na pevnině. Moře jsou znečišťována především odpady, pesticidy, antibiotiky, fosfáty a plasty. Závažným problémem je rovněž nevybuchlá munice.
EHSV je toho názoru, že EU je zcela zásadním aktérem v legislativní oblasti a na mezinárodní scéně, který pomáhá posílit sítě a partnerství, a že by měly být do všech fází tohoto procesu účinně a transparentně zapojeny různé zainteresované subjekty.
Zpravodaj uvedeného stanoviska EHSV Stefano Palmieri upozornil: „EU sice hraje v úsilí o ochranu oceánů vedoucí roli, musí k němu však přispět všechny státy. Jedině tak lze totiž zaručit, aby Země zůstala i pro příští generace ‚modrou planetou‘.“
Aby byla EU schopna docílit do roku 2050 uhlíkové neutrality a do roku 2030 udržitelnosti, měla by v první řadě učinit opatření, která umožní ochránit dobrý stav mořského prostředí a rybí populace, poněvadž obojí má existenční význam pro řadu komunit. (mp)
