The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

U novom mišljenju usvojenom na siječanjskom plenarnom zasjedanju EGSO tvrdi da je intenzivnija međunarodna suradnja od ključne važnosti za osiguravanje održivosti oceana do 2030. godine, kao i za sigurnost i zaštitu na moru.
Imajući u vidu složenost upravljanja oceanima, ono se ne smije smatrati samo pomorskim pitanjem već iziskuje višedisciplinarni i integrirani pristup radi potpore donositeljima odluka na svim razinama.
Ljudski utjecaj na oceane često proizlazi iz aktivnosti koje se provode na kopnu. Velik dio onečišćenja mora uzrokovan je ispuštanjem otpada, pesticida, antibiotika, fosfata i plastike, čemu treba pridodati i pitanje neeksplodiranih eksplozivnih sredstava.
EGSO smatra da EU ima ključnu ulogu kao zakonodavac i međunarodni akter koji radi na jačanju mreža i partnerstava te da u svim fazama treba na djelotvoran i transparentan način uključivati razne dionike.
„EU ima vodeću ulogu u naporima koji se ulažu u zaštitu oceana, ali sve zemlje moraju odraditi svoj dio. To je jedini način da novim naraštajima omogućimo da naš planet zovu plavim planetom”, izjavio je izvjestitelj Stefano Palmieri.
Kako bi postigla ugljičnu neutralnost do 2050. i održivost do 2030., Europska unija mora se usredotočiti na poduzimanje mjera za zaštitu morskog okoliša i ribljih stokova, koji su od životne važnosti za brojne zajednice. (mp)
