The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Ökat internationellt samarbete är avgörande för att göra haven hållbara senast 2030 och säkerställa trygghet och säkerhet till havs, säger EESK i ett nytt yttrande som antogs vid plenarsessionen i januari.
Med tanke på dess komplexitet kan världshavsförvaltningen inte betraktas som en rent ”marin angelägenhet”, utan kräver en tvärvetenskaplig och integrerad strategi för att stödja beslutsfattare på alla nivåer.
Den mänskliga inverkan på haven härrör ofta från landbaserad verksamhet. En betydande andel av havsföroreningarna har sitt ursprung i utsläpp av avfall, bekämpningsmedel, antibiotika, fosfater och plast, för att inte tala om frågan om oexploderad ammunition.
Enligt EESK har EU en avgörande roll som lagstiftare och som en internationell aktör som stärker nätverk och partnerskap, och olika aktörer bör på ett ändamålsenligt och öppet sätt involveras i alla steg på vägen.
”EU spelar en ledande roll i ansträngningarna för att skydda haven, men alla länder måste bidra: endast då kan framtida generationer fortsätta att kalla jorden den blå planeten”, sade föredraganden Stefano Palmieri.
För att uppnå koldioxidneutralitet senast 2050 och hållbarhet senast 2030 bör EU fokusera på att vidta åtgärder för att säkerställa en välmående havsmiljö och skydda fiskbestånden, som båda är avgörande för många samhällen. (mp)
