The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

EESO je v novem mnenju, sprejetem na januarskem plenarnem zasedanju, poudaril, da je okrepljeno mednarodno sodelovanje ključnega pomena za zagotovitev trajnosti oceanov do leta 2030 ter zaščite in varnosti na morju.
Ker je upravljanje oceanov zapleteno, ga ni mogoče obravnavati zgolj kot „pomorsko zadevo“, temveč je potreben multidisciplinaren in celosten pristop za podporo nosilcem odločanja na vseh ravneh.
Človeški vpliv na oceane pogosto izvira iz dejavnosti na kopnem. Velik delež onesnaženosti morij predstavljajo odpadki, pesticidi, antibiotiki, fosfati in plastika, da ne omenjamo neeksplodiranih eksplozivnih teles.
Po mnenju EESO je ključnega pomena vloga EU kot zakonodajalca in mednarodnega akterja, ki krepi mreže in partnerstva, različne zainteresirane strani pa bi morale biti jasno vključene v celotni proces.
„EU ima vodilno vlogo v prizadevanjih za podporo oceanom, vendar morajo vse države odigrati svojo vlogo: le tako bodo lahko nove generacije naš planet še vedno imenovale modri planet,“ je dejal poročevalec Stefano Palmieri.
Da bi dosegli ogljično nevtralnost do leta 2050 in trajnostnost do leta 2030, bi se morala EU osredotočiti na ukrepe za zaščito dobrega stanja morskega okolja in ribjih staležev, ki so bistvenega pomena za številne skupnosti. (mp)
