The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Konferencen om kvinder på arbejdsmarked arrangeret af EØSU i anledning af kvindernes internationale kampdag blev afholdt den 8. marts i skyggen af krigen. Deltagerne hyldede de bemærkelsesværdige ukrainske kvinder for deres styrke, mod og robusthed.
I sin åbningstale bemærkede EØSU's formand, Christa Schweng, at de ukrainske kvinder og piger tvinges til at forlade deres land, hvilket bringer dem i større fare for at blive udsat for vold.
Formand for ad hoc-gruppen om ligestilling og medlem af EØSU, Maria Nikolopoulou, fremhævede på samme måde, at: "Kvinder, mødre og hustruer er fanget i en krigszone, og at mange af dem selv bliver soldater, mens andre forsøger at flygte fra grusomhederne og de voldelige angreb. Vi stemmer i med civilsamfundet i alle lande, som kræver, at krigen bringes til ophør".
Covid-19-pandemien har yderligere forøget den kønsbetingede forskel i beskæftigelsen og har desuden medført en stigning i vold og chikane på arbejdspladsen.
Ligestillingskommissær Helena Dalli har meddelt, at Kommissionen vil fremsætte et forslag til direktiv om bekæmpelse af vold mod kvinder og vold i hjemmet, som vil være bindene for alle medlemsstaterne.
For så vidt angår sektoren for kunstig intelligens udgør kvinder kun 16 % af arbejdsstyrken, hvilket betyder, at mændene, som udgør 84 %, træffer alle beslutninger og indtager førerrollen. "Hvis kvinderne mangler i disse sektorer, vil det sige, at hele vores nye verden bliver udformet af mænd med den forudindtagethed, som de eventuelt måtte have", sagde Christa Schweng. (at)
