The EU's contribution to the UN Food Systems Stocktaking Moment

Scope and objectives

On 22 June 2023, the EESC will host an online public hearing in the context of the meeting of its Permanent Study Group on Sustainable Food Systems. The event will gather representatives from FAO, the European institutions and civil society organisations to explore the state of progress of the EU on the path to more sustainable, fairer and inclusive food systems, following the new actions agreed upon during the UN Food System summit in 2021 (UNFSS) and ahead of the July's Stocktaking Moment.

In particular, the event will:

  • Explore leverages from the Farm to Fork strategy to support the Coalitions of Action in the transformation of food systems
  • Present EU actions and leadership towards global food systems transformation
  • Discuss how the UNFSS follow-up can further upscale actions from the EU in the global context
  • Examine any missing elements of the current governance structure and discuss future expectations

The event will also provide a discussion forum on how the UNFSS mobilizes support and connects with other actors.

This event will be webstreamed live on our website and participants will be able to interact through the Sli.do platform (code: #EUFoodSummit). Interpretation provided: FR EN ES.

Background

The UN convened a Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) in 2021 with the aim to launch bold new actions to transform the way the world produces and consumes food, delivering progress on all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a follow-up of this high-level summit, the UN Secretary-General has committed to convene a global stocktaking meeting every two years to review progress in implementing the outcomes of this process and its contributions to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda.

This first Stocktaking Moment will take place in Rome from 24 till 26 July 2023 and aims to create a conducive space for countries to review commitments to action that were made during the Summit, share stories of success and early signs of transformation, maintain the momentum for bold acceleration and bold action to further the resilience of food systems, advocate for their adaptation to climate change, ensure they contribute to communities’ resilience to further shocks and crises, and boost the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
