Tijdens zijn conferentie in Bilbao op 10 en 11 oktober 2023 heeft het Europees Economisch en Sociaal Comité (EESC) met klem gepleit voor een Europees actieplan ter bestrijding van zeldzame ziekten.
Het hoofddoel is de nationale gezondheidsstelsels nauwer te laten samenwerken, zodat patiënten met een zeldzame ziekte een betere diagnose, behandeling en zorg kunnen krijgen.
Zeldzame ziekten vormen een ernstig probleem in alle EU-lidstaten. De nieuwe Europese gezondheidsunie kan een belangrijke rol spelen in de bestrijding ervan.
In de praktijk zijn zeldzame ziekten minder zeldzaam dan we misschien denken. De cijfers zijn alarmerend. Er zijn meer dan 7000 zeldzame ziekten, en 8% van de burgers lijdt aan één daarvan, wat neerkomt op ongeveer 36 miljoen mensen.
De conferentie werd georganiseerd door de afdeling Vervoer, energie, infrastructuur en informatiemaatschappij (TEN). Ze werd bijgewoond door 50 sprekers, 45 leden van het EESC, de directeur-generaal van DG Gezondheid en Voedselveiligheid van de Europese Commissie, drie leden van het Europees Parlement en ongeveer 550 andere deelnemers uit heel Europa.
“De gezondheidsunie die we aan het opbouwen zijn, moet bescherming en zorg bieden aan elke burger. Het is onze plicht om mensen met een zeldzame ziekte en hun gezin te ondersteunen. Onze inspanningen zullen een wereld van verschil blijven maken voor iedereen die hulp nodig heeft”, aldus Stella Kyriakides, Europees commissaris voor Gezondheid en Voedselveiligheid.
“Zeldzame ziekten zijn eigenlijk helemaal niet zeldzaam. Het is een gemeenschappelijke Europese uitdaging die om een gemeenschappelijke Europese oplossing vraagt”, zei EESC-voorzitter Oliver Röpke. TEN-afdelingsvoorzitter Baiba Miltoviča voegde hieraan toe: “We hebben een Europees actieplan nodig zodat patiënten met een zeldzame ziekte behandeld kunnen worden in het EU-land dat daarvoor het meest geschikt is. Deze mensen verdienen de best mogelijke zorg, eender waar in Europa.” (mp)
