Tá an caidreamh idir an tAontas Eorpach agus na comharsana ó dheas ar cheann de na tosaíochtaí atá againn. Baineann an obair a dhéanaimid le raon leathan réimsí, amhail rannpháirtíocht na sochaí sibhialta in idirphlé polaitiúil agus sibhialta, aistriú chuig an daonlathas, fostaíocht le haghaidh daoine óga, forbairt inbhuanaithe, soghluaisteacht agus inimirce, trádáil, fuinneamh in-athnuaite agus forbairt gnó.

Tá CESE ag déileáil leis na saincheisteanna sin ó 1995 i leith. I ndiaidh athruithe a theacht ar an réigiún in 2010, d'athraíomar na cuspóirí a bhí againn dá réir ionas go ndíreofaí ar na nithe seo a leanas:

  • tacaíocht a thabhairt d'eagraíochtaí na sochaí sibhialta i dtíortha atá i mbun athraithe. Tá an tacaíocht sin dírithe, go háirithe, ar eagraíochtaí ceardchumainn agus ar eagraíochtaí fostóirí chomh maith le cumainn ban, óige agus feirmeoirí.
  • caidreamh déthaobhach a chothú le comhairlí náisiúnta eacnamaíocha agus sóisialta sa réigiún, agus obair a dhéanamh chun na cúinsí a chothú a chuirfidh ar chumas na sochaí sibhialta páirt a ghlacadh san idirphlé polaitiúil i dtíortha comhpháirtíochta an deiscirt.
  • tuairimí agus tuarascálacha comhpháirteacha a eisiúint maidir leis na dúshláin is mó ó thaobh beartas atá roimh an réigiún.
  • cruinnithe rialta le hinstitiúidí Eorpacha agus le heagraíochtaí idirnáisiúnta a thionól chun na beartais a bhaineann leis an tsochaí shibhialta fud fad an réigiúin a phlé.
  • cruinniú mullaigh bliantúil do chomhairlí eacnamaíocha agus sóisialta agus d'institiúidí den sórt céanna a reáchtáil, ina gcuirtear moltaí barrthábhachtacha beartais maidir le príomhdhúshláin an réigiúin faoi bhráid lucht ceaptha beartas na rialtas náisiúnta agus an Aontais Eorpaigh.

This opinion is the EESC's key response to the events in the Euromed region. It provides a thorough analysis of the EU's past failings and the lessons which need to be drawn from them, the most urgent needs facing civil society in the current transition phase, and the longer term perspectives for civil society in the region. The opinion also responds to the two joint communications issued by the European Commission and EEAS on the EU's new Euromed policy, calling for close cooperation between the EU institutions in the region

This report is the result of the commitment of the EESC Euromed Follow-Up Committee to women issues in the region.

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is fully aware of the varying circumstances in different countries in the Mediterranean region. It is particularly aware of the conflict and instability affecting many southern Mediterranean countries. The EESC calls on the European Commission (EC) and governments of the countries of the Euro-Mediterranean region to develop shared solutions to these challenges – including poverty, economic challenges, conflict and terrorism – which are resulting in unacceptable suffering, especially among women.

The central role that women play in the process of democratisation during transitional periods, when drafting national constitutions and when reforming current laws must be safeguarded and sustained through good governance in order to prevent setbacks in gender equality.
