The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

The EESC has six sections, specialising in concrete topics of relevance to the citizens of the European Union, ranging from social to economic affairs, energy, environment, external relations or the internal market.

Nuo 1992 m. ES bando įgyvendinti biologinės įvairovės strategijas, bet reikšmingų rezultatų taip ir nepasiekta. Taip yra daugiausia todėl, kad nacionaliniu lygmeniu prastai įgyvendinama teisinė sistema ir nepakankamai finansuojamos būtinos priemonės.
EESRK palankiai vertina atnaujintą Komisijos įsipareigojimą ir pastangas plėtoti Biologinės įvairovės strategiją, kurioje nustatomi iki 2030 m. įgyvendintini tikslai, nes tai vienas iš būdų įgyvendinti ES žaliąjį kursą.
Pranešėjo Antonello Pezzini ir bendrapranešėjo Lutzo Ribbe nuomone, ši strategija – tai kelias, kuriuo eidami pasieksime, kad Europos biologinė įvairovė, grąžindama gamtą į mūsų gyvenimą, taptų svarbiu prioritetu atsigaunant po COVID-19 ir būtų naudinga žmonėms, klimatui ir planetai.
ES turi iš esmės padidinti pastangas likusiems mūsų gamtos ištekliams apsaugoti ir rengti informuotumo didinimo ir komunikacijos kampanijas. EESRK taip pat mano, kad būtina didinti saugomų teritorijų, ypač griežtai saugomų, plotą, kad būtų atkurtos buveinės ir užkirstas kelias rūšių nykimui.
EESRK taip pat atkreipia dėmesį į tai, kad biologinės įvairovės apsaugos finansinė našta neturi tekti ūkininkams ir miškų savininkams. Veikiau šios „viešosios gėrybės ir vertybės“ užtikrinimas jiems patiems turėtų tapti gera galimybe gauti pajamų.
Rengiantis kitam Biologinės įvairovės konvencijos šalių susitikimui Kinijoje 2021 m., dar reikia labai daug nuveikti pasaulio biologinei įvairovei apsaugoti. Atėjo laikas Europai imtis lyderės vaidmens ir įtikinti kitas šalis, kad prasminga laikytis priimtų strategijų. (mr)
