The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

The EESC has six sections, specialising in concrete topics of relevance to the citizens of the European Union, ranging from social to economic affairs, energy, environment, external relations or the internal market.

Retten til et sundt miljø er afgørende for borgernes sociale og økonomiske velfærd i Europa og resten af verden. Den Internationale Arbejdsorganisation (ILO) anslår f.eks., at omkring 40 % af alle job på verdensplan afhænger af et sundt klima. Selv om EU har vedtaget meget lovgivning, er gennemførelsen ofte mangelfuld, og EØSU opfordrer derfor til at optrappe indsatsen for at gøre de eksisterende retlige instrumenter mere effektive.
På et bagtæppe af Ruslands krig mod Ukraine og Ukraines fremtidige medlemskab af EU er det vigtigere end nogensinde, at EU og EU's medlemsstater giver retten til et sundt miljø reel effekt. EØSU understreger, at behovet for at passe bedre på miljøet og dermed værne om de grundlæggende rettigheder i og uden for EU er presserende og er blevet forstærket af de alvorlige skader på miljøet, som krigen i Ukraine er årsag til.
EØSU advarer især om risiciene for menneskers mentale og fysiske sundhed, forringelsen af økosystemerne samt forureningen af luft, vand og jord og fremhæver især den skrøbelige fødevaresikkerhed på verdensplan. Ifølge EØSU ligner Ruslands handlinger mest af alt et økocid, og det opfordrer til, at "økocid" officielt gøres strafbart i EU-retten.
Endelig insisterer EØSU på, at det er helt afgørende at dokumentere, kortlægge og måle disse følgevirkninger for at kunne beskytte miljøet juridisk, sikre, at nogen kan holdes til ansvar, og skabe grundlaget for en grøn og socialt retfærdig genopretning efter krigen.
