The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

The EESC has six sections, specialising in concrete topics of relevance to the citizens of the European Union, ranging from social to economic affairs, energy, environment, external relations or the internal market.

Na úvod májového plenárneho zasadnutia predsedníčka EHSV zdôraznila, že „je nevyhnutné, aby sme v spojitosti s následkami vojny na Ukrajine a geopolitickými výzvami, ktoré na nás čakajú, zaujali jednotný postoj. Európa sa musí zmeniť z lídra v oblasti krízového riadenia na svetového lídra, pokiaľ ide o formovanie budúcnosti.“
Predseda Európskej rady Charles Michel, ktorý navrhol nový prístup k rokovaniam o rozšírení, uviedol, že Kremeľ sa mýlil, pokiaľ ide o vlastné vojenské schopnosti, silu ukrajinského odporu a európske odhodlanie a jednotu.
EÚ by vzhľadom na pomalý pokrok v rokovaniach s krajinami západného Balkánu a nové žiadosti Ukrajiny, Gruzínska a Moldavska o pristúpenie mala zvážiť prístup takzvanej „primeranej a riadenej integrácie“.
Podľa Charlesa Michela by „riešením mohla byť postupná a progresívna integrácia počas prístupového procesu“.
Predseda Európskej rady hovoril o vytvorení európskeho geopolitického spoločenstva, keďže EÚ preberá zásadnejšie politické vedenie. V rámci tohto spoločenstva by hlavnou oblasťou spolupráce bola zahraničná politika. Predseda dodal, že „cieľom je dosiahnuť konvergenciu a prehĺbiť operačnú spoluprácu so zámerom sústrediť sa na spoločné výzvy, mier, stabilitu a bezpečnosť na našom kontinente.“
Spresnil však, že „táto iniciatíva nemá v žiadnom prípade za cieľ nahradiť rozšírenie alebo hľadať nové ospravedlnenie za odklad. Jej zámerom nie je ani zaručiť zúčastňujúcim sa krajinám, že sa niekedy v budúcnosti stanú členmi EÚ.“ (at)
