The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Předsedkyně EHSV v úvodním proslovu na květnovém plenárním zasedání zdůraznila: „Je nezbytné, abychom se k důsledkům války na Ukrajině i k budoucím geopolitickým výzvám stavěli jednotně. Evropa si vede mistrně při překonávání krizí, a nyní musí ukázat světovou třídu i v otázkách budoucího vývoje.“
„Kreml se zcela přepočítal, jak co se týče vlastních vojenských schopností, tak co se týče urputnosti, s níž se Ukrajina brání, a rázné a svorné reakce z evropské strany,“ prohlásil předseda Evropské rady Charles Michel. Navrhl také změnit přístup k jednáním o rozšíření EU.
Vzhledem k tomu, že jednání se zeměmi západního Balkánu postupují pomalu a že o členství v EU nejnověji požádaly Ukrajina, Gruzie a Moldavsko, by EU měla přejít k „úměrné a řízené integraci“.
Podle Charlese Michela „by měla kandidátské státy začleňovat postupně a progresivně v průběhu celého procesu přistoupení“.
Předseda Evropské rady dále uvedl, že se EU stává stále významnějším politickým aktérem, a proto by bylo vhodné vytvořit evropské geopolitické společenství. Jednou ze stěžejních oblastí spolupráce v rámci tohoto společenství by byla zahraniční politika. „Umožnilo by to posílit jednotu a prohloubit praktickou spolupráci při řešení společných problémů a zajišťování míru, stability a bezpečnosti na našem kontinentu,“ dodal.
Charles Michel však upozornil, že „tato iniciativa v žádném případě nemá nahradit proces rozšíření ani zavdat důvod k dalším průtahům. Nemá ani zúčastněným zemím zaručovat, že se někdy v budoucnu stanou členy EU.“ (at)
