The event was designed to be a forum for discussing the opportunities and challenges provided by the European Year of Rail in terms of the benefits of rail, its contribution to sustainable and smart mobility and what still needs to be done in order for it to become the sustainable and competitive transport option.
To mark the 2021 European Year of Rail, the EESC is organising a screening of a short film by the Europalia Arts Festival.
The short film will be an excerpt from the dance performance La Ronde by the famous French choreographer Boris Charmatz. Charmatz performed live for six hours in the hall of Brussels North train station on 15 October, in a show that was part of the Europalia Trains and Tracks programme for 2021. A six-hour series of events with dancing, singing and talking duets, visualising and symbolising a collective moment in a public space.
Energy poverty is high at the EESC's agenda as more Europeans may struggle to afford access to essential energy, particularly with rising energy costs.
The European Commission published on 14th July 2021 a proposal for reviewing the EU Directive on Energy Efficiency, aimed at further stimulating EU efforts to promote energy efficiency and achieve energy savings in the fight against climate change. The proposal forms part of the Fit for 55 package.
The aim of the hearing is to exchange views with experts from public and private sector on the review of the Energy Efficiency Directive put forward by the European Commission. The event also serves as a source of inspiration for the preparation of the EESC opinion on the Review of the Energy Efficiency Directive.

The number of live 5G networks has increased significantly in Europe and outside Europe since the beginning of 2019. The result of a 2020 Deloitte study on 5G technology shows that 39% of participants believe that 5G is safe for health, while 21% believe that 5G is harmful, and 40% have doubts.
