The EESC is the first EU institution to introduce the EU Youth Test

Today, the EESC decided to start a pilot project to implement the EU Youth Test in its opinions and to set up a new Youth Group, thus delivering on important priorities of President's Röpke political manifesto. 

President Röpke said: "I have made it my political priority to open the doors of the EESC to young people. The future of Europe is their future.  I am very proud to announce that today we are delivering on that priority. The EESC will be the first EU institution to implement the EU Youth Test, and I am glad that we are leading by example. It is our testimony to the young EU citizens, that we can turn words into action, promises into reality and that this forum is their forum."

Upon his election, President Röpke committed to involve young people more actively in the policy-making process. Already in June, he invited representatives of youth organisations, including from the European Youth Forum and Generation Climate Europe, to participate in the EESC Plenary debate. Since taking up his office, he has also met with several national youth groups from EU and beyond to hear their views and voices on important EU topics.

Today, the EESC is taking the first steps in paving the way towards a truly participatory and inclusive approach in shaping EU policies.

• Firstly, the EESC decided to start a pilot project on the implementation of the EU Youth Test in the opinion-making process. As of September, EESC sections and other bodies will be invited to select pilot opinions that will be checked for its relevance to youth. Young people will be directly involved in the consultation process of those opinions.  

• Secondly, an EESC Youth Group will be set up to coordinate youth related initiatives and to identify best opportunities for young people to further contribute to the work of EESC. The Group will aim to strengthen the cooperation with EU institutions and national youth bodies in the EU and candidate countries. It will also be responsible for developing the methodology behind the EU Youth Test.

The EESC Youth Group will report back to the EESC Bureau within 6 months on the progress achieved and on the initial results of the pilot project
