Χρειαζόμαστε διαρκώς περισσότερες επενδύσεις σε ανανεώσιμες πηγές ενέργειας προκειμένου να εξασφαλίσουμε ένα οικολογικότερο, ασφαλέστερο και οικονομικά πιο προσιτό μέλλον για την Ευρώπη: Η Πρόεδρος της ΕΟΚΕ Christa Schweng και η Επίτροπος Ενέργειας Kadri Simson εξέφρασαν ομόφωνα αυτήν την πεποίθηση κατά τη σύνοδο ολομέλειας της ΕΟΚΕ στις 22 Μαρτίου.
Επισημαίνοντας ότι η εκτίναξη των τιμών της ενέργειας στα ύψη, ο πληθωρισμός και η χαμηλή οικονομική ανάπτυξη είχαν ως αποτέλεσμα ένα πολύ δύσκολο έτος για τους πολίτες και τις επιχειρήσεις, η κ. Schweng δήλωσε ότι «η προσπάθεια μετάβασης της Ευρώπης σε καθαρές μορφές ενέργειας, η επιτάχυνση της ανάπτυξης των ανανεώσιμων πηγών ενέργειας, η καθιέρωση οικονομικά προσιτών τιμών ενέργειας και η διασφάλιση και διαφοροποίηση του ενεργειακού μας εφοδιασμού παραμένουν κορυφαίες προτεραιότητες για την ΕΟΚΕ».
Η κ. Simson παρουσίασε τα επόμενα βήματα για την ενεργειακή πολιτική της ΕΕ: «Αν μπορούσα να μιλήσω γι’ αυτό το θέμα με τρεις μόνο λέξεις, θα ήταν "ανανεώσιμες πηγές ενέργειας". Ακριβώς επειδή αυτή είναι η κορυφαία προτεραιότητα της Επιτροπής στον τομέα της ενεργειακής πολιτικής: η προώθηση και η επίτευξη των στόχων μας όσον αφορά τις ανανεώσιμες πηγές ενέργειας».
Για πρώτη φορά στα χρονικά, η ΕΕ δεν εξαρτάται πλέον από τη ρωσική ενέργεια. Μέσω της διαφοροποίησης του εφοδιασμού με φυσικό αέριο, της μείωσης της ζήτησης, της βελτίωσης της απόδοσης και της παροχής ισχυρότερης ώθησης στις ανανεώσιμες πηγές ενέργειας, η ΕΕ έθεσε τέλος στην τεράστια εξάρτησή της από τη Ρωσία.
Το 39 % της ηλεκτρικής ενέργειας της ΕΕ προέρχεται πλέον από ανανεώσιμες πηγές ενέργειας. Το 2022 υπήρξε έτος ρεκόρ: η ΕΕ παρήγαγε περισσότερη ηλεκτρική ενέργεια από αιολική και ηλιακή ενέργεια από ό,τι από φυσικό αέριο, ενώ η αιολική δυναμικότητα αυξήθηκε κατά 15 GW και η αντίστοιχη ηλιακή κατά 41 GW.
