Encouraging the engagement of young people towards achieving sustainable development

Scope and objectives

On 26 April 2022, the EESC will hold a public hearing which will feed into its information report on Encouraging the engagement of young people towards achieving sustainable development. The event is held in the context of the Commission's initiatives on education and training for the green transition as well as existing national, European and global initiatives and best practices which look at transformative education and practises for sustainable development.

In addition, in light of the war in the Ukraine, the objective is not only to look at the ambition for a green and just transition but also to ensure that education contributes to the promotion of a culture of peace which is the core of the UN Agenda 2030.

The aim of the hearing is to find out more about the state of play in the Member States, as well as the limitation and barriers to implement a transformative education for sustainable development on a national level.

Join us to see what is done and can be done to reassess, rethink and redefine education with the goal to a sustainable future!

Context

Education for Sustainable Development is recognized as an integral element of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) on quality education and a key enabler of all other SDGs.

Specifically, target SDG 4.7 aims to ensure that "all learners acquire knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship, and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development".
