The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Als bijdrage aan de Food Systems Summit 2021 van de Verenigde Naties (VN) heeft het EESC op 28 mei jl. een onlinehoorzitting gehouden om de zwakke punten en ongelijkheden van Europese voedselsystemen in kaart te brengen en na te gaan hoe de toeleveringsketens eerlijker en billijker kunnen worden gemaakt. Prominente sprekers van de VN, de Europese Commissie en het Europees Parlement hebben van gedachten gewisseld over de veranderingen die nodig zijn om met behulp van een eerlijker, rechtvaardiger en meer op rechten gebaseerde aanpak de stap te zetten naar duurzamere voedselsystemen.
De COVID-19-pandemie heeft ons wakker geschud en laten zien dat het tijd is voor verandering. Hoewel boeren en medewerkers in de voedselketen in de frontlinie hebben gestaan tijdens de COVID-19-crisis en alle Europese burgers voortdurend van voedsel hebben voorzien, “heeft deze crisis duidelijk gemaakt dat voedsel van ‘boer tot bord’ krijgen niet vanzelfsprekend is”, aldus Andreas Thurner, voorzitter van de thematische studiegroep Duurzame Voedselsystemen van het EESC.
Het EESC heeft in de loop der jaren diverse voorstellen en specifieke ideeën uitgewerkt, die kunnen worden gegroepeerd in vijf series aanbevelingen voor de VN-top over voedselsystemen:
I. Een alomvattend en geïntegreerd voedselbeleid bevorderen
II. Gezondere en duurzamere voedingspatronen stimuleren
III. Eerlijke prijzen waarborgen en oneerlijke handelspraktijken uitbannen
IV. Het potentieel van korte voedselvoorzieningsketens en agro-ecologie vergroten
V. Zorgen voor structurele betrokkenheid en participatie van het maatschappelijk middenveld
