The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Norėdamas prisidėti prie 2021 m. Jungtinių Tautų (JT) aukščiausiojo lygio susitikimo maisto sistemų klausimais, EESRK gegužės 28 d. surengė internetinį klausymą, kurio tikslas – išnagrinėti Europos maisto sistemų pažeidžiamumą ir nelygybę, taip pat nustatyti, kaip užtikrinti teisingesnes ir sąžiningesnes tiekimo grandines. Aukšto lygio pranešėjai iš JT, Europos Komisijos ir Europos Parlamento pasidalijo nuomonėmis apie tai, kokių pokyčių reikia norint sustiprinti teisingumą, sąžiningumą ir teisėmis grindžiamą požiūrį pereinant prie tvaresnių maisto sistemų.
COVID-19 pandemija buvo įspėjimas, kad reikia pokyčių. Kaip teigė EESRK teminės tyrimo grupė dėl tvarių maisto sistemų pirmininkas Andreas Thurner, nors ūkininkai ir maisto sistemų darbuotojai COVID-19 krizės metu buvo priešakinėse gretose ir užtikrino nenutrūkstamą maisto tiekimą visiems europiečiams, „ši krizė parodė, kad maisto tiekimas „nuo ūkio iki stalo“ negali būti laikomas savaime suprantamu dalyku“.
Per keletą metų EESRK parengė pasiūlymų ir konkrečių idėjų – visa tai galima sugrupuoti į penkis rekomendacijų rinkinius ir perduoti JT aukščiausiojo lygio susitikimui maisto sistemų klausimais:
I. Skatinti visapusišką ir integruotą maisto politiką;
II. Skatinti sveikesnę ir tvaresnę mitybą;
III. Užtikrinti teisingas kainas ir uždrausti nesąžiningos prekybos praktiką;
IV. Skatinti trumpų tiekimo grandinių ir agroekologijos potencialą;
V. Užtikrinti struktūrinį pilietinės visuomenės dalyvavimą.
