The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Lai sniegtu ieguldījumu Apvienoto Nāciju Organizācijas (ANO) 2021. gada samitā par pārtikas sistēmām, EESK 28. maijā rīkoja tiešsaistē uzklausīšanu, kuras mērķis bija izpētīt saistībā ar Eiropas pārtikas sistēmām pastāvošos trūkumus un nevienlīdzību un apzināt, kā palielināt piegādes ķēžu līdzsvarotību un taisnīgumu. Augsta līmeņa referenti no ANO, Eiropas Komisijas un Eiropas Parlamenta dalījās viedokļos par izmaiņām, kas nepieciešamas, lai pārejā uz ilgtspējīgākām pārtikas sistēmām stiprinātu taisnīgumu, godīgumu un tiesībās balstītu pieeju.
Covid-19 pandēmija ir bijusi modinātājzvans pārmaiņām. Lauksaimnieki un pārtikas sistēmā nodarbinātie atradās Covid-19 krīzes pirmajās rindās un nodrošināja nepārtrauktu pārtikas piegādi visiem Eiropas iedzīvotājiem. “Šī krīze ir apliecinājusi, ka pārtikas sagādāšana “no lauka līdz galdam” nav pašsaprotama,” teica EESK tematiskās izpētes grupas “Ilgtspējīgas pārtikas sistēmas” priekšsēdētājs Andreas Thurner.
Gadu gaitā EESK ir izstrādājusi vairākus priekšlikumus un konkrētas idejas, ko varētu apkopot kā piecus ieteikumus iesniegšanai ANO samitā par pārtikas sistēmām:
I. Sekmēt visaptverošus un integrētus pārtikas politikas pasākumus.
II. Veicināt veselīgāku un ilgtspējīgāku uzturu.
III. Nodrošināt taisnīgas cenas un aizliegt negodīgu tirdzniecības praksi.
IV. Uzlabot īsu pārtikas piegādes ķēžu un agroekoloģijas iespējas.
V. Nodrošināt sistemātisku pilsoniskās sabiedrības iesaistīšanu un līdzdalību.
