The Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU has tasked the EESC with formulating an opinion on how to achieve strategic autonomy and sustainable food production.The opinion adopted at its January plenary session.

    On Friday, 14 April 2023, the NAT Section is organising a public hearing "Towards a European Food Policy Council / Sustainable Food System" to feed into the own-initiative opinion NAT/892- Towards a European Food Policy Council as a new governance model in the future EU Framework on Sustainable Food Systems in order to compile the views of the civil society organisations working on these issues.

    Cultured meat (CM) is raising interest globally, including from multinational food companies, as an innovative technology to produce meat without farming animals. This completely different way of obtaining animal proteins is perceived as disruptive to the existing system. This study reviews the state of the art of research related to the potential impact of CM development on environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainability, highlighting important knowledge gaps. These gaps fuel polarised positions.

    The use of single-use plastics in packaging has grown significantly in the last decades, and with it, the pollution of our environment. There is an urgent need to improve the sustainability of our food systems, which includes also the development of more sustainable food packaging. The objective of this study is to identify and examine successful examples and approaches to food packaging in the EU and beyond, considering consumer safety, environmental, economic, social, legal and food waste reduction considerations.
