The LULUCF revision will be part of the Commissions 'Fit for 55 Package', which will cover wide-ranging policy areas to ensure emission reductions of at least 55 % by 2030. The importance of the LULUCF sector for climate action and the necessity of revision of the current regulation was also mentioned in the 2030 Climate Target Plan adopted by the European Commission and published on 17 September 2020.
From 29 October 2020 - 26 November 2020, the Commission provided a feedback period on its inception impact assessment (IIA), available on the 'Have your say' consultation page of the Commission.
Through the same page, from 13 November 2020 - 05 February 2021 a public consultation was open for stakeholders to provide input on the revision of the LULUCF regulation.
The existing LULUCF regulation was amended in the context of the 2030 climate and energy framework as proposed in 2014. The Regulation (EU) 2018/841 was published in the Official Journal on 19 June 2018 and entered into force on 9 July 2018. As part of the European Green Deal, the European Commission will adopt a new EU Forest Strategy.
