Africa in Lisbon / Ubuntu

Joint exhibition by two photographers, one Portuguese and one African, linked to the 2021 EU-Africa Summit and the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the EU.

The Portuguese artist Ana Carvalho presents the Africa in Lisbon exhibition, depicting the presence and impact of African culture in Lisbon, while the African artist José Pereira, based in Cape Verde, presents the Ubuntu photo exhibition, promoting a way of peaceful co-existence, acceptance of differences and solidarity.

On 2 March 2021, the ACP-EU Follow-up Committee, the secretariat of which is provided by the EESC External Relations (REX) Section, held the seventh meeting of the Africa-EU Economic and Social Stakeholders' Network. This important joint consultation of civil society will contribute to the the Sixth African Union-EU Summit, which is to take place in the second half of 2021.

To mark the ocassion, the EESC opened the joint Africa – EU photo exhibition, during a virtual launch event with Cillian Lohan, Vice-President for Communication, Carlos Trindade, Chair of the ACP-EU Follow-up Committee and the two photographers.

As stated by Mr Trindade:
"Because culture expresses the shared values and affections of a community with common interests, the purpose of this cultural activity is to highlight the importance given by the EESC to the upcoming EU-Africa Summit and at the same time bring into the spotlight the deep-rooted connection of the two continents. The joint exhibition by one African and one European artist, in this case one Portuguese, is proof of the well-established connection of cultural elements to both continents.
That is also the reason why we included the online launch event in the meeting's agenda."

The joint photo exhibition will be 100% virtual and shall be accessible online from 1 until 31 March 2021.
