Background Information

Social media platforms and AI algorithms play a pivotal role in shaping public discourse, which is particularly relevant for Eastern Europe: misinformation, algorithms with specific aims and uneven content curation can lead to a distorted portrayal of this region, with repercussions on European integration.

The information report will examine the role of AI algorithms and their impact on the visibility of content about Eastern Europe, reflect on how to encourage social media platforms to promote high-quality and fact-based content, identify language stereotypes in traditional media and their algorithmic amplification.

Desirable institutional follow-up to these actions would be recommendations for amending the Digital Services Act concerning platform accountability for misinformation related to Eastern Europe, support for the development of EU-funded initiatives in favour of media literacy and algorithmic transparency, and a collaboration with EU bodies like the European Parliament to encourage cooperation with tech platforms.
