The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

The EESC has six sections, specialising in concrete topics of relevance to the citizens of the European Union, ranging from social to economic affairs, energy, environment, external relations or the internal market.

Den senaste tidens händelser till följd av covid-19, extrema väderförhållanden på grund av klimatrubbningar, it-angrepp och brexit visar på behovet av att se över prioriteringarna och förbättra de europeiska livsmedelssystemens resiliens och hållbarhet genom att stärka deras oberoende. För många EU-medborgare är livsmedelstrygghet ingen självklarhet.
EESK anser att det är av största vikt att man tar fram en verktygslåda med riskhanteringsåtgärder för att hantera extrema situationer inom livsmedelskedjorna, så att myndigheterna, jordbrukarna och industrin kan vidta omedelbara åtgärder.
I sitt yttrande på eget initiativ med titeln ”Strategiskt oberoende, livsmedelstrygghet och hållbara livsmedel” föreslår EESK en definition av öppet strategiskt oberoende som tillämpas på livsmedelssystem på grundval av livsmedelsproduktion, arbetskraft och rättvis handel, med det övergripande målet att säkerställa livsmedelstrygghet och hållbara livsmedel för alla EU-medborgare genom en rättvis, hälsosam, hållbar och resilient livsmedelsförsörjning.
”Gårdar, bördig jordbruksmark och vatten är strategiska tillgångar och måste skyddas i hela EU: de utgör ryggraden i vårt öppna strategiska oberoende i fråga om livsmedel”, betonar EESK:s föredragande för yttrandet, Klaas Johan Osinga. (mr)
