L-avvenimenti reċenti kkawżati mill-COVID-19, it-temp estrem minħabba t-taqlib fil-klima, l-attakki ċibernetiċi u l-Brexit juru l-ħtieġa li nerġgħu nikkunsidraw il-prijoritajiet u mtejbu r-reżiljenza u s-sostenibbiltà tas-sistemi tal-ikel tal-UE, billi tissaħħaħ l-awtonomija tagħha. Is-sigurtà tal-ikel mhix awtomatika għal bosta ċittadini tal-UE.
Fil-fehma tal-KESE, huwa kritiku li jiġi żviluppat sett ta’ għodod li jinkludi miżuri ta’ ġestjoni tar-riskju biex jgħinu lill-ktajjen tal-provvista tal-ikel jindirizzaw sitwazzjonijiet estremi li jgħinu lill-awtoritajiet, lill-bdiewa u lill-industrija jieħdu azzjoni immedjata.
Il-KESE, fl-Opinjoni fuq inizjattiva proprja tiegħu dwar L-awtonomija strateġika u s-sigurtà u s-sostenibbiltà tal-ikel, jipproponi definizzjoni ta’ awtonomija strateġika miftuħa li tapplika għal sistemi tal-ikel ibbażati fuq il-produzzjoni tal-ikel, il-forza tax-xogħol u l-kummerċ ġust, bil-għan ġenerali li jiġu żgurati s-sigurtà u s-sostenibbiltà tal-ikel għaċ-ċittadini kollha tal-UE permezz ta’ katina tal-provvista tal-ikel ġusta, tajba għas-saħħa, sostenibbli u reżiljenti.
“L-irziezet, l-art agrikola fertili u l-ilma huma assi strateġiċi u għandhom ikunu protetti madwar l-UE: dawn jikkostitwixxu s-sinsla tal-awtonomija strateġika u miftuħa tal-ikel tagħna,” enfasizza r-relatur tal-KESE għal din l-Opinjoni Klaas Johan Osinga. (mr)
