Solidarity with the General Strike called by CGT, CTA-T and CTA-A in Argentina, on 24th January

We are deeply worried by the most recent developments in Argentina. While the elected government has the right to develop measures to counter the ongoing economic crisis in the country, we do not believe privatisation, deregulation, and the elimination of social protection networks, in a situation as dire as the one many poor Argentinians are facing, is a viable response. 

Moreover, the measures put forward by the new Milei government infringe upon several fundamental rights, including the right to protest peacefully, of free association, expression and reunion. These threats to the rule of law and to social protests and trade union action are a direct threat to democracy, and the kind of impediment to union activity displayed are a worrying sign of authoritarianism. 

We convey our full solidarity with our colleagues of the Argentinian Trade Union movement, in their struggle to defend workers’ rights and people’s living conditions, and we request the Argentinian government to return to social dialogue and to find broad agreements and achieve long-lasting, sustainable reforms.
