This publication provides a summary of the discussion entitled "Advantages of digital society" which was held in Tallinn (Estonia) on 25 October 2017. The participants discussed various aspects of e-society and the Digital Single Market. Cyber security, societal trust, the free flow of data, the further development of infrastructure and getting rid of barriers hindering the Digital Single Market were just a few of the issues raised.
The study carried out by the European Citizen Action Service (ECAS) aims to provide an analysis of the current consultation practices at the European Commission as well as to examine the potential of an intermediary body, such as the EESC, and organised civil society, in improving this tool for participatory democracy in the EU.
The European Economic and Social Committee and Confrontations Europe held a Digital Agenda Conference entitled "Innovation in the digital era: reinventing our economy" in Brussels on 21 April 2016. With nearly 300 participants, well-known and high-level speakers, interactive debates with the audience, and the participation of representatives from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, a member of the French Digital Council, EESC members and Commissioner Oettinger, this event was undoubtedly a huge success.
The "Smart Cities" project is a follow-up to the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) own-initiative opinion on smart cities as a driver of a new European industrial policy, adopted in July 2015.

Balancing economic benefits and ethical questions of Big Data in the EU policy context
Social Media have clearly altered the nature of civil society and also have an impact on democratic and political engagement, particularly among civil society organisations.
The TEN section focuses its work on keeping the right balance between the three pillars of EU energy policy: competitiveness, sustainability and security. The new White Paper from the European Commission entitled “Roadmap to a Single European Transport Area – T owards a competitive and resource-efficient transport system”, which was adopted by the Commission on 28 March 2011, constitutes the basic reference for the work of the TEN section in the field of transport.
The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has been a consistent voice in discussions surrounding online communication. In fact, we have been debating issues of safety,privacy and human dignity in electronic communications and media for nearly two decades. In the last five years we have produced a set of coherent and robust opinions on the matter, which have positively influenced the current debate.
