The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Tijdens zijn zitting van maart had het Europees Economisch en Sociaal Comité plaats ingeruimd voor een debat met Olivér Várhelyi, commissaris voor Nabuurschap en Uitbreiding, over de stand van zaken met betrekking tot de toetreding van de partners van de Westelijke Balkan. Leden van het EESC gaven lucht aan hun overtuiging dat de toetreding van deze partners tot de EU een geostrategische investering in vrede en economische groei is.
EESC-voorzitter Christa Schweng opende het debat met de mededeling dat het EESC groot belang hecht aan de uitbreiding van de EU met de Westelijke Balkan: "Ons Comité beschouwt de Westelijke Balkan als het ontbrekende puzzelstukje in het streven van de Europese Unie naar een verenigd en duurzaam Europa, een Europa dat klaar is voor de toekomst."
Óliver Várhelyi wees op de gevolgen van de COVID-19-pandemie voor de Westelijke Balkan en benadrukte dat "de Europese Commissie vastbesloten is om onze naaste buren met alle mogelijke middelen te blijven steunen in deze moeilijke tijden.” De heer Várhelyi presenteerde ook het economisch en investeringsplan van de Commissie voor de Westelijke Balkan, een initiatief van 9 miljard euro met als tweeledig doel om het economisch herstel op gang te brengen en de regio beter te laten aansluiten op de Europese Unie. “Het plan moet niet alleen de economische ontwikkeling, de veerkracht en het concurrentievermogen, maar ook de sociale cohesie van de regio een impuls geven. Daarvoor moeten we samenwerken,” aldus Várhelyi.
Na de discussie werd het advies Bevordering van het toetredingsproces – Een geloofwaardig EU-perspectief voor de Westelijke Balkan goedgekeurd. Rapporteur Andrej Zorko benadrukte het belang van de uitbreiding: "De toetreding van de partners van de Westelijke Balkan tot de EU is een geostrategische investering in vrede, stabiliteit, veiligheid en economische groei op het hele continent.” (dfg)
