The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Kovo mėn. Europos ekonomikos ir socialinių reikalų komiteto plenarinėje sesijoje vyko diskusija su Europos Komisijos nariu, atsakingu už kaimynystę ir plėtrą, Olivériu Várhelyi, kurios metu aptarta dabartinė Vakarų Balkanų partnerių stojimo į ES padėtis. EESRK narių įsitikinimu, Vakarų Balkanų partnerių integracija į ES yra geostrateginė investicija į taiką ir ekonomikos augimą.
EESRK pirmininkė Christa Schweng diskusiją pradėjo pabrėždama, kad EESRK Vakarų Balkanų stojimui į ES teikia didelės reikšmės: „Mūsų Komiteto nuomone, Vakarų Balkanai yra trūkstama dėlionės dalis, kad išsipildytų Europos Sąjungos siekis sukurti vieningą ir tvarią Europą – ateičiai pritaikytą Europą“, – pažymėjo ji.
Óliver Várhelyi paminėjo COVID-19 pandemijos pasekmes Vakarų Balkanams ir pabrėžė, kad „Europos Komisija yra pasiryžusi šiuo sunkiu metu visomis priemonėmis toliau remti mūsų artimiausius kaimynus“. Ó. Várhelyi taip pat pristatė Komisijos Vakarų Balkanų ekonomikos ir investicijų planą – 9 mlrd. EUR iniciatyvą, kuria siekiama dviejų tarpusavyje susijusių tikslų – suteikti postūmį ekonomikos atsigavimui ir gerinti šio regiono konvergenciją su Europos Sąjunga. „Pagal šį planą siekiama ne tik paskatinti regiono ekonominį vystymąsi, atsparumą ir konkurencingumą, bet ir socialinę sanglaudą. To turime siekti drauge“, – pabrėžė Ó. Várhelyi.
Po diskusijos buvo priimta nuomonė Stojimo proceso stiprinimas Įtikima ES perspektyva Vakarų Balkanų šalims. Nuomonės pranešėjas Andrej Zorko pabrėžė stojimo proceso svarbą: „Vakarų Balkanų partnerių integracija į ES yra geostrateginė investicija į viso žemyno taiką, stabilumą, saugumą ir ekonomikos augimą.“ (dfg)
