The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Marta plenārsesijā Eiropas Ekonomikas un sociālo lietu komiteja rīkoja debates ar kaimiņattiecību un paplašināšanās komisāru Olivér Várhelyi, lai apspriestu situāciju saistībā ar Rietumbalkānu partneru pievienošanos. EESK locekļi ir pārliecināti, ka Rietumbalkānu partneru integrēšana Eiropas Savienībā ir ģeostratēģisks ieguldījums miera un ekonomikas izaugsmes veicināšanā.
Debates atklāja EESK priekšsēdētāja Christa Schweng, uzsvērdama, ka EESK piešķir lielu nozīmi ES paplašināšanai ar Rietumbalkānu valstīm: “Mūsu Komiteja uzskata, ka Rietumbalkāni ir trūkstošais mozaīkas gabaliņš Eiropas Savienības centienos izveidot vienotu un ilgspējīgu Eiropu, Eiropu, kas būtu gatava nākotnei.”
Óliver Várhelyi minēja Covid-19 pandēmijas ietekmi uz Rietumbalkāniem un uzsvēra, ka “Eiropas Komisija ir apņēmusies turpināt šajā grūtajā laikā ar visiem līdzekļiem atbalstīt mūsu tuvākos kaimiņus”. Komisārs Várhelyi iepazīstināja arī ar Komisijas Ekonomikas un investīciju plānu Rietumbalkāniem, kas ir 9 miljardus vērta iniciatīva ar divkāršu mērķi – sākt ekonomikas atveseļošanu un uzlabot reģiona konverģenci ar Eiropas Savienību. “Plāna mērķis ir veicināt ne tikai reģiona ekonomisko attīstību, noturību un konkurētspēju, bet arī tā sociālo kohēziju. Lai to panāktu mums jāstrādā kopā,” sacīja Ó. Várhelyi.
Pēc debatēm tika pieņemts atzinums Pievienošanās procesa uzlabošana — ticama ES perspektīva Rietumbalkāniem. Atzinuma ziņotājs Andrej Zorko norādīja uz paplašināšanās procesa nozīmi: “Rietumbalkānu integrācija Eiropas Savienībā ir ģeostratēģisks ieguldījums mierā, stabilitātē, drošībā un ekonomikas izaugsmē visā kontinentā.” (dfg)
