The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Na marčevskem plenarnem zasedanju Evropskega ekonomsko-socialnega odbora je potekala razprava s komisarjem za sosedstvo in širitev Olivérjem Várhelyijem o stanju pristopnega procesa partneric z Zahodnega Balkana. Člani EESO so izrazili prepričanje, da je njihovo vključevanje v EU geostrateška naložba v mir in gospodarsko rast.
Predsednica EESO Christa Schweng je razpravo začela z besedami, da EESO pripisuje velik pomen širitvi EU na Zahodni Balkan: „Naš odbor meni, da je Zahodni Balkan manjkajoči del sestavljanke v prizadevanju Evropske unije, da ustvari enotno in trajnostno Evropo, pripravljeno na prihodnost.“
Óliver Várhelyi je omenil posledice, ki jih je pustila pandemija COVID-19 na Zahodnem Balkanu, in poudaril, da je „Evropska komisija odločena, da v teh težkih časih z vsemi sredstvi še naprej pomaga našim najbližjim sosedom“. Predstavil je tudi sporočilo Komisije o gospodarskem in naložbenem načrtu za Zahodni Balkan. Pobuda v vrednosti 9 milijard EUR ima dva cilja: zagnati gospodarsko okrevanje in izboljšati konvergenco regije z Evropsko unijo. „Namen načrta je spodbuditi ne le gospodarski razvoj, odpornost in konkurenčnost regije, temveč tudi njeno socialno kohezijo. To moramo doseči s skupnimi močmi,“ je poudaril Várhelyi.
Po razpravi je bilo sprejeto mnenje Okrepitev pristopnega procesa – verodostojna perspektiva EU za Zahodni Balkan. Poročevalec za mnenje Andrej Zorko je poudaril pomen širitvenega procesa: „Vključevanje partneric z Zahodnega Balkana v EU je geostrateška naložba v mir, stabilnost, varnost in gospodarsko rast evropske celine.“ (dfg)
