The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Det Europæiske Økonomiske og Sociale Udvalg var under plenarforsamlingen i marts vært for en debat med Olivér Várhelyi, kommissær med ansvar for naboskabspolitik og udvidelse, hvor man drøftede den aktuelle situation vedrørende Vestbalkanpartnernes tiltrædelse. EØSU's medlemmer gav udtryk for den overbevisning, at Vestbalkanpartnernes integration i EU er en geostrategisk investering i fred og økonomisk vækst.
EØSU's formand, Christa Schweng, åbnede debatten med at understrege, at EØSU tillægger EU's udvidelse med Vestbalkan stor betydning: "Vores udvalg betragter Vestbalkan som den manglende brik i et puslespil, hvor Den Europæiske Union nærer ambition om at skabe et forenet og bæredygtigt Europa – et Europa, der er klar til fremtiden," udtalte hun.
Olivér Várhelyi kom ind på de følger, som covid-19-pandemien har haft for Vestbalkan, og understregede, at "Kommissionen er fast besluttet på at støtte vores nærmeste naboer med alle midler i disse vanskelige tider". Olivér Várhelyi fremlagde også Kommissionens økonomiske plan og investeringsplan for Vestbalkan, et initiativ på 9 mia. EUR med det dobbelte mål at kickstarte den økonomiske genopretning og forbedre regionens konvergens med Den Europæiske Union. "Målet med planen er at fremme ikke alene regionens økonomiske udvikling, modstandsdygtighed og konkurrenceevne, men også dens sociale sammenhængskraft. Vi må arbejde sammen om at nå disse mål", understregede Olivér Várhelyi.
Debatten blev efterfulgt af vedtagelsen af en udtalelse om Styrkelse af tiltrædelsesprocessen – Et troværdigt EU-perspektiv for landene på Vestbalkan. Ordføreren for udtalelsen, Andrej Zorko, fremhævede udvidelsesprocessens betydning: "Integration af partnerne på Vestbalkan i EU er en geostrategisk investering i fred, stabilitet, sikkerhed og økonomisk vækst på hele kontinentet".
