EU:n ja sen eteläisten naapurimaiden väliset suhteet ovat yksi komitean painopisteistä. Tämä työ kattaa monia erilaisia aloja: esimerkiksi kansalaisyhteiskunnan osallistuminen poliittiseen ja kansalaisvuoropuheluun, demokratiaan siirtyminen, nuorten työllisyys, kestävä kehitys, liikkuvuus ja maahanmuutto, kauppa, uusiutuvat energialähteet ja yritystoiminnan kehittäminen.

ETSK on työskennellyt näiden asioiden parissa vuodesta 1995. Komitea on mukauttanut tavoitteitaan alueella vuonna 2010 tapahtuneiden muutosten mukaisesti. Tavoitteena on

  • tukea kansalaisyhteiskunnan organisaatioita siirtymävaiheessa olevissa maissa ja kohdentaa tällainen tuki erityisesti ammattiliitoille ja työnantajajärjestöille sekä naisten, nuorten ja maataloustuottajien järjestöille
  • pitää yllä kahdenvälisiä suhteita alueen kansallisten talous- ja sosiaalineuvostojen kanssa ja pyrkiä luomaan olosuhteet kansalaisyhteiskunnan osallistamiselle poliittiseen vuoropuheluun eteläisissä kumppanimaissa
  • antaa lausuntoja ja laatia yhteisiä raportteja alueen keskeisistä poliittisista haasteista
  • järjestää säännöllisesti kokouksia EU:n toimielinten ja kansainvälisten organisaatioiden kanssa keskustelun käymiseksi kansalaisyhteiskuntaa koko alueella koskevista politiikoista
  • järjestää vuosittain talous- ja sosiaalineuvostojen sekä vastaavien elinten huippukokous, jossa kansallisten hallitusten ja EU:n poliittisille päätöksentekijöille esitellään keskeisiä politiikkoja koskevia suosituksia kyseisten alueiden merkittävimpiä haasteita varten.

  • The New Pact for the Mediterranean is designed to improve young people’s future

    At its September plenary session, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) adopted an opinion on the New Pact for the Mediterranean, a month ahead of its official launch by the European Commission. The Committee calls for bottom-up processes ensuring that the Pact has a direct, positive impact on all people, especially on youth.

  • New opportunities for cooperation in the energy sector in the Euro-Mediterranean region

    On 17 October the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) held a conference on the geopolitics of energy strategies in the Euro-Mediterranean region. Jointly organised with the Italian National Council for Economics and Labour (CNEL) in Rome, the conference underlined the potential of the EU's Southern Neighbourhood countries as producers of green hydrogen, especially now in light of the war in Ukraine. The area can become a key player in the energy sector to the benefit of all involved stakeholders.
