Trade Union Solidarity with the people of Paris - 07/01/2016 – EESC Workers' Group message of solidarity
For the citizens of Paris, 2015 began and ended with incidents of barbarity and intolerance which overwhelmed not only those directly affected, but reverberated across Europe leaving people in deep shock. At the start of this New Year and as European trade unionists gather in Paris to show their solidarity for the people of Paris, the Workers' Group of the European Economic and Social Committee adds its voice to this solidarity action. We will continue to stand with you, and all those affected, and keep you in our thoughts. Those responsible for the attacks against the Charlie Hebdo journalists and people peacefully enjoying themselves and socialising on a Friday evening want to spread fear, hatred, mistrust and intolerance. We must not let them succeed. European civil society is playing a vital role in welcoming the refugees fleeing from war-torn countries demonstrating that pluralism, tolerance and solidarity are key values that bind our societies together. As our governments take various actions in response to the challenges currently facing us, we as trade unionists must remain vigilant and continue to speak out against all breaches of human and fundamental rights, including attacks on the freedom of expression and the freedom of association, no matter who is responsible.
