25th meeting of the EU Domestic Advisory Group created under the EU-Colombia, Peru and Ecuador FTA
The 25th meeting of the EU-Colombia/Peru/Ecuador Domestic Advisory Group held on 20 April 2026 focused on the political, social and labour situation in the Andean region alongside the implementation of the EU trade agreement. Participants highlighted a deteriorating context marked by political instability, security concerns and persistent human rights and labour rights violations, as well as broader issues such as environmental degradation and the impact of drug trafficking.
While the European Commission noted continued growth in trade and ongoing cooperation on labour, social and environmental issues, it acknowledged limited progress on strengthening the Trade and Sustainable Development chapter and ongoing challenges, notably in labour rights and gender equality. Contributions from the ILO and civil society confirmed persistent shortcomings in compliance with labour standards, including weak enforcement and poor working conditions.
Discussions also addressed complaints under the EU’s Single Entry Point mechanism, especially regarding labour and environmental issues in Ecuador’s banana sector, with calls for stronger enforcement. The meeting concluded with the DAG reaffirming the need for close monitoring and announcing forthcoming recommendations to the Commission regarding human rights, labour standards, environmental protection and social dialogue.
