The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Plenarforsamlingen i juli var en lejlighed til at vedtage en initiativudtalelse om indførelse af beskyttelsesforanstaltninger for landbrugsprodukter i EU's handelsaftaler.
I udtalelsen, der blev vedtaget lige inden revisionen af EU's handelspolitik, som Kommissionen har iværksat, er der fokus på den geostrategiske udfordring, der er forbundet med fødevareproduktion. Ligeledes understreges behovet for at beskytte det enkelte lands produktionskapacitet ved at fremme velegnede landbrugs- og handelspolitikker og samtidig sikre, at den internationale handel foregår på en måde, der kan håndtere såvel udsving i produktionen som visse geografiske områders permanente mangler.
Ifølge ordfører Arnold Puech d’Alissac, medlem af EØSU's Arbejdsgivergruppe, "giver udviklingen af IT-kapacitet nu mulighed for at indføre langt mere effektive foranstaltninger. Det kan være hurtige, automatiske, forholdsmæssige og omfattende foranstaltninger, der har til formål at beskytte sektorerne, lige fra producent til forbruger".
Desuden, understregede ordføreren, "er det også en anledning til at øge kendskabet til konceptet bæredygtighed i handelsforhandlinger for ikke at favorisere billig import af produkter, der fremstilles under forhold, der ikke er tilstrækkeligt bæredygtige, frem for europæisk produktion. I lyset af den aktuelle grønne pagt er det vigtigt, at der er sammenhæng mellem miljø-, landbrugs- og handelspolitikkerne.
