Improving the sustainability of the European food supply chain

The European food supply chain has proven to be remarkably resilient during the COVID-19 pandemic. The crisis has highlighted the interconnectedness of actors and activities in agriculture and throughout the food supply chain. It has also emphasised the vulnerabilities of certain groups and sectors and the need to move towards more diverse and fair food supply chains, leaving no one behind. Food supply chains need to become smart, sustainable and inclusive and they need to support sustainable local agricultural and food production through direct interaction between producers, businesses and consumers, creating more resilient communities.

The meeting aims to provide a forum for discussing how to make food supply chains more sustainable and fairer for all the actors involved. It will provide an opportunity to continue the debate on the implementation of the European Green Deal by promoting the transition of the whole food chain to more sustainable production and processing practices (in terms of green technologies, the circular economy and climate neutral production) but with particular attention also to maintaining the socially sustainable transposition and the competitiveness of the whole food supply chain.

The Diversity Europe Group will organise this debate in the framework of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU and of the Conference on the Future of Europe. Speakers will include prominent Slovenian and European actors representing the institutional, agricultural, consumers and environmental perspective as well as the research and business arenas.

The event will take place on 29 November 2021 both in Brussels and in Ljubljana in hybrid form.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and current restrictions at the EESC, external participants are kindly invited to follow the meeting from remote, using the Interactio platform. The link to connect to the meeting will be sent to all registered participants in due course. Simultaneous interpretation will be available from FR DE EN IT EL ES SL and into FR DE EN IT EL ES SL.
