Background
The European Commission announced in its Industrial Action Plan for the European automotive sector an upcoming Battery Booster package.
This battery strategy aims at increasing the competitiveness of EU-produced battery cells and components, and is expected to include both direct financial incentives as well as additional support strategies for the industry.
The strategy is not only a key part of the action plan for the automotive industry, but it is also intrinsically linked to the efforts to support the entire battery value chain and ensure a resilient, autonomous and competitive battery manufacturing sector in Europe. The strategy is also directly linked to the opinion CCMI/251, which covers one of the segments of the battery sector that should be reflected in the overall sectoral industrial policy.
This opinion will look into the proposal put forward by the Commission, and present the recommendations from civil society, building on the previous work for a fair and competitive transition in the automotive sector, recognising it as a strategic pillar of European economy. It will also expand on the work being developed in CCMI related to new technologies in the battery manufacturing sector, such as sodium batteries, exploring the possible link between this strategy and cost-efficient, green and blue alternatives.
