The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

Under en konferens som nyligen anordnades av gruppen Mångfald Europa uppmanade företrädare för det civila samhället sina organisationer att tala om för politikerna vilken typ av samhälle de vill skapa och leva i.
Deltagarna i konferensen ”Civilsamhällesorganisationerna under och efter covid-19: vilka utmaningar och vilken framtid?” framhöll att politisk sammanhållning och medborgarnas meningsfulla deltagande är av avgörande betydelse. De efterlyste en övergripande och integrerad strategi för beslutsfattande som aktivt främjar EU:s värden, medborgarnas välbefinnande och nedifrån och upp-initiativ med respekt för EU-medborgarnas åsikter och rättigheter. I detta sammanhang kommer det att vara viktigt att utnyttja de nya former av solidaritet och socialt engagemang som växt fram under pandemin.
Séamus Boland, ordförande för gruppen Mångfald Europa, lyfte fram det enastående engagemang som organisationer i det civila samhället uppvisat och uppmuntrade både dem och medborgarna att aktivt bidra till att återuppbygga och återställa våra samhällen efter covid-19.
”Det är läge att se över våra tillväxt- och styrningsmodeller och att skapa balans mellan å ena sidan ekonomiskt välstånd och å andra sidan social inkludering, humankapital, hållbarhet och välbefinnande”, konstaterade Séamus Boland. Han menade också att en övergripande och integrerad strategi för beslutsfattande och det civila samhällets deltagande i utformningen och förverkligandet av den nya världen är två förutsättningar för en verklig omställning.
Gruppordföranden uppmanade EU och de nationella myndigheterna att arbeta med organisationer i det civila samhället som partner och underströk att det civila samhället och offentliga myndigheter måste fortsätta att försvara den demokratiska samhällsstyrningen, de grundläggande rättigheterna och rättsstatsprincipen.
