The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is the voice of organised civil society in Europe.

The EESC issues between 160 and 190 opinions, evaluation and information reports a year.
It also organises several annual initiatives and events with a focus on civil society and citizens’ participation such as the Civil Society Prize, the Civil Society Days, the Your Europe, Your Say youth plenary and the ECI Day.

The EESC brings together representatives from all areas of organised civil society, who give their independent advice on EU policies and legislation. The EESC's326 Members are organised into three groups: Employers, Workers and Various Interests.

EESK efterlyser fler gemensamma åtgärder inom ramen för EU:s strategi för sjöfartsskydd, som syftar till att bevara EU:s suveränitet, säkerhet och konkurrenskraft. Kommittén stöder samarbetet mellan EU och Nato om sjöfartsskydd och framhåller vikten av ett solitt samarbete med internationella partner för att gemensamt bekämpa människosmuggling och människohandel.
Vid sin plenarsession i september antog EESK ett yttrande om kommissionens gemensamma meddelande om EU:s strategi för sjöfartsskydd och dess handlingsplan, där kommittén underströk betydelsen av multilateralism som en central politik i EU:s yttre åtgärder på sjöfartsområdet.
EESK anser att samarbetet mellan EU och Nato bör stärkas så att man uppnår en effektivare samordning på olika områden av gemensamt intresse, inbegripet kritisk infrastruktur.
Anastasis Yiapanis, EESK-ledamot och föredragande för yttrandet, noterade: ”Strategin för sjöfartsskydd ligger i linje med EU:s strategiska kompass. Sjöfartssektorn bör prioriteras och betraktas ur ett brett perspektiv, särskilt mot bakgrund av de växande hybridhoten.”
EESK uppmanar även EU att fördjupa samarbetet med internationella partner för att ta itu med frågor av gemensamt intresse, bland annat människosmuggling och människohandel.
Mateusz Szymański, EESK-ledamot och medföredragande för yttrandet, förklarade: ”EU bör prioritera besättningarnas säkerhet”.
Tyvärr nämns inte det civila samhällets roll i förslaget till EU:s strategi för sjöfartsskydd. EESK understryker att det behövs kontinuerligt samarbete och konstruktiva diskussioner med det civila samhället i EU för att säkerställa allmänhetens stöd för kommissionens förslag och framtida åtgärder.
