Giulia Barbucci, Member of the European Economic and Social Committee since 2015, was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy. She lives between Rome, Italy, and Brussels, Belgium.

Since 2001, she has been working as a full-time officer in the European and International Policy section at CGIL (Confederazione Generale Italiana del Lavoro), the largest Italian trade union confederation. Before this position, she worked in other departments of CGIL: since 1997 in the Industrial Relations and Collective Bargaining Department and from 1989 to 1996 in the International Department in charge of Western European countries.

Since 2009 she is Member of the Executive Committee of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) and since 2007 deputy member of its Women's Committee; member of the European Social Dialogue Committee and of the Working Group on Workers' participation. She took part in European social partner negotiations and participated in the Italian transposition of many European directives.

She was member of the Governing Board of the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions of Dublin from 2003 to 2013.

She attended the "International visitor program" in the United States of America, organised by the U.S.A. State Department in December 1996, and the training course on "The context and actors of industrial relations in Europe" at the European Centre for Industrial Relations of Florence in 1997.

Regarding her education, she obtained in 1982 the Linguistic General Certificate of Education at the Linguistic High School in Rome, and graduated in 1988 from the “La Sapienza” University of Rome in Foreign Languages and Literature.

She obtained the Mittelstufe-Prüfung II at the Goethe-Institut of Rome in 1988, and attended an intensive course of Spanish language at the Cervantes Institute of Rome in 1989.

She has a very good knowledge of the English, German and French languages and a basic knowledge of the Spanish language.
