  • On 25th of March, the EESC Workers’ Group gathered together with a number of guest speakers from academia, trade unions and MEPs from the European Parliament, to discuss the current geopolitical situation, its impact on social and defence expenditure, its spillovers on supply chains and industry, and the consequences for the welfare states and workers’ rights.  

  • The EESC:

    • stresses the need to provide for oversight mechanisms regarding the application at national level of the proposed adaptations to the regulatory framework;
    • recommends that general transfer licences be prioritised and used systematically for all projects financed or coordinated at EU level, and that this system be extended and harmonised across the national systems;
    • recommends that the possibility for Member States to authorise national exemptions for chemical substances ‘in the interests of defence’ be subject to appropriate environmental verification and compatibility procedures.
  • In this opinion the EESC:

    • believes the EU must work towards a common defence policy within the broader framework of its foreign and security policy and establish a strong European Defence Pillar. To this end, the necessary legislative and financial measures must be taken urgently;
    • Calls for greater support for SMEs and closer collaboration with research institutions to meet defence needs and safeguard strategic autonomy;
    • stresses the importance of expanding international defence cooperation, particularly with key global partners, to enhance Europe’s security stance.
  • Senior European Defence Agency (EDA) officials briefed members of the defence industry community on 11 February 2025, ahead of a new European strategy to strengthen the European Union’s defence industrial base.

    "Cohesion policy 2028–2034: A new fund, a new framework, a new role for civil society?" brings together EU institutions, social partners and civil society representatives to reflect on the future of cohesion policy in the next Multiannual Financial Framework. The hearing explores proposals for reforming cohesion funding and governance, assesses the implications of the new framework through the National and Regional Partnership Plans and examines how civil society organisations can play a stronger role in the design, implementation and monitoring of cohesion policy. The discussion aims to identify how cohesion policy can continue to deliver territorial, social and economic cohesion while responding to new challenges and transitions facing the European Union.
