Objective(s): 
Environmental and energy saving goals. The voluntary agreement negotiated by the European Association of Consumer Electronics Manufacturers (EACEM) sets targets to reduce energy consumption by televisions (TVs) and video recorders (VCRs) in standby mode. In 1997 EACEM had 29 members, comprised of 22 individual companies and 7 national trade associations, 16 member companies of EACEM signed the voluntary commitment at the time. On 30 April 1997, the European Association of Consumer Electronics Manufacturers (EACEM) submitted that agreement to the European Commission for negative clearance and/or exemption pursuant to Article 85 of the EC Treaty and Article 53 of the EEA Agreement. The Commission indicated its intention to take a favourable view.
