The future of the European battery industry
📅 Date: 11 June 2026
🕒 Time: 14:30 – 17:00
📍 Venue: European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), JDE Building, Rue Belliard 99–101, 1040 Brussels, Belgium
This high-level debate on The future of the European battery industry takes place in the context of the Battery Booster Strategy adopted by the European Commission and the broader Preparedness Union objectives aimed at reinforcing Europe’s competitiveness, resilience, and strategic autonomy. It is also framed by the current energy context, including rising concerns over energy security and increasing global energy price volatility, which underscore the urgency of accelerating the transition to alternative energy storage solutions.
The discussion will focus on two main priorities:
- assessing the challenges and opportunities facing the European battery ecosystem, including the emergence of new technologies such as sodium batteries, which are increasingly seen as a strategic complement to lithium-ion storage solutions, offering Europe an opportunity to strengthen its energy resilience, industrial competitiveness and strategic autonomy;
- identifying concrete actions to scale up manufacturing capacity, mobilise investment, and build a competitive, circular, and autonomous battery value chain in Europe.
This debate will take place in the framework of the CCMI meeting on 11 June and will bring together CCMI members and delegates, alongside policymakers, industry representatives, and civil society stakeholders.
