Background

Biodiversity, on which we all depend, is disappearing at an unprecedented rate.

This initiative is one of the key measures announced in the EU’s 2030 Biodiversity Strategy. It will propose legally binding nature restoration targets, subject to an impact assessment.

The initiative will contribute to the goal of the 2030 Biodiversity Strategy: to put Europe’s biodiversity on the path to recovery.

The general objective is to restore degraded ecosystems, in particular those with the most potential to capture and store carbon and to prevent and reduce the impact of natural and man-made disasters. This objective is supported by the twin aim :

  • to ensure the sustainable use of ecosystems,
  • and to improve knowledge and monitoring.

Restoring EU’s ecosystems will also help to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
